Some mornings, I’m cool with keeping it simple. Scrambled eggs, a yogurt bowl, or even a chia seed pudding I made the night before. But other mornings call for carbs, especially after a hard workout. This is why I have been absolutely obsessed lately with this protein waffle recipe. And you know what’s the best part? You can mix it all up easily in a blender!
My favorite kind of protein for waffles
To be honest with you, you can use any kind of protein for these waffles. Tone It Up’s line of protein powders is currently a favorite of mine, and or these waffles, I highly recommend using Tone It Up’s Plant-Based Vanilla Protein. I use only 1 scoop of it, which is only 100 calories and 1 net carb—if you like to count those sorts of things.
The ingredients you’ll need
This recipe makes 1 Belgian-style waffle, so you’ll want to get this kind of waffle maker. If you have a smaller waffle maker, you an always make multiple with all of the batter you have. The recipe does call for one serving, so whatever you make, it’s all for you. Yay!
To make this waffle, you simply blend it up (I use my Nutribullet) and place it in a greased waffle iron. Here are the ingredients you’ll need.
- 1/4 cup rolled-cut oats
- 1/4 cup Greek plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup milk (cow’s milk or almond milk work fine!)
- 1 large egg
- 1 scoop of protein powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
And of course, you’ll need cooking spray to grease your waffle iron. And any of the desired toppings you want on top. Clearly I’m a strawberries-and-whipped-cream kind of gal.
This recipe gives you a serious boost of protein
While my body craves carbs some mornings, I also know I need to start my day with a good amount of protein. If I don’t, I feel sluggish, tired, and constantly hungry. This is why I rely on the protein powder, egg, and Greek yogurt to give me that protein boost.
Depending on the protein powder and Greek yogurt you use, you should get roughly around 27 grams of protein with this waffle, which is great for a meal! A two-egg scramble will only give you 10 grams, so this amount is great if you’re looking for a great protein source to start your day—especially if you’re a vegetarian.
I know a lot of you don’t care for counting calories and grams for your macros, and that’s totally fine. But I find that looking at the data helps me to understand my body. For example, how would I know protein is the thing I need in the morning to make me my happiest if I wasn’t tracking and looking at the data?

This didn’t work for me at all. It was way too watery. Maybe the amount of protein powder makes a difference? I think omitting the milk would have worked but I tried to salvage it and I could not, unfortunately.
Kiersten says
Oh I’m sorry Eva! Yeah maybe the amount of protein powder does matter. I’m going to measure it out and make that edit so people know at least how much I use. That does make a huge difference. Thanks for your honesty!
