So a little update—I’m changing how these “on my plate” posts are going to look in the future. I’ll divide it up into smaller sections to update you on fun things from my week—which I’ll share on Sundays! It’s more to give me some guidance on what I should actually write, instead of just ranting on a random topic. Let’s get to it.
My favorite outfit
Oh hi. It’s me. Just your average girl taking a bathroom selfie before heading off to eat outside for a few hours. Because that’s what we do during a pandemic. We suffer through the bitter cold in order to support our local restaurants because we love them and want them to stick around. So this was my outfit yesterday before sitting outside La Contenta Oeste in the West Village. A new favorite, if you ask me. Great chilaquiles and cocktails.
Personally, I’m really proud of this outfit. The hat, earrings, sweater, and shoes are all second-hand purchases. The coat and the pants are old. This coat I’m wearing is from Nordstrom and I bought it five years ago. It has seen better days, but it still rocks that chic winter look I’m going for. The jeans are from Madewell.
My favorite moment.
Sipping on some bubbly as I watched the first female to ever become Vice President of the United States. I sobbed through the whole ceremony and felt really proud to be a woman that day. Kamala Harris is the perfect person to step into that role for the first time, and I am so excited to see all that she will do this year.
Also, this past week we got to see some of our friends, which during a pandemic feels like a huge blessing. On Thursday, we did a safe outdoor hang with some of our Brooklyn peeps, out on a patio with a propane heater. We drank hot tea and ate pastries—and made this whole winter-outdoor-hang thing work. We hate it. But we love each other. So we’ll keep doing it until we’re all vaccinated and safe and can hug each other inside and have dinner. I really can’t wait for the day.
My favorite purchase.
I officially decided to lean into my granny status and buy one of these grocery carts. I mean…I’m already crocheting blankets, cross-stitching patterns, baking bread…it was only a matter of time until I bought one of these grocery carts and look like all the other little old ladies in Brooklyn.
Judge me all you want, New Yorkers! But I won’t have back problems in 20 years! And if any of you are sick of carrying your heavy groceries home, I suggest grabbing one of yourself. I love that I get to buy food without having to worry about how heavy it is. No joke, I bought a giant box of ice cream sandwiches last time I was at the store. Because I could.
Anywho. So I decided that I want to write these more regularly again (probably on Sundays), but to keep them a bit shorter. And I thought it would be fun to share with you some reads & recipes I enjoyed from the week. So here’s a little start:
My favorite reads.
1 // Give yourself a break! This article talks about the lovely rhythm of having tea time in the afternoon—taking a little break when you’re working from home. It’s something I’ve been personally doing, so I really enjoyed the read. (Chicago Reader)
2 // Shadows on the Silk Road. Such an incredible read from a journalist traveling the Silk Road, traditionally used for trade back in the day. Takes your brain on a little daydream to the other side of the world. (New York Times)
3 // Stress management with fizzy drinks? My husband shared this one originally with me. Relaxation drinks are all the rage in the food industry right now—promising stress-free days with a sip of a can. I found this deep dive into the industry fascinating, particularly because I write about the food industry all the time. (The Verge)
4 // The Hill We Climb. Amanda. Gorman. What an incredible writer and poet. I had tears from her poem on Wednesday as she read it at the inauguration, and I couldn’t help but read it again. If you missed it, read it here. (Town & Country)
5 // Small Batch Pull-Apart King Cake Muffins. Mardi Gras is only around the corner, and a Small King Cake sounds like exactly the kind of treat I need in my life. (Joy the Baker)
My favorite meal.
The Mediterranean Breakfast Platter at Balzem in New York City. As you can see, it’s like a charcuterie board, but for brunch. And y’all know I love a good charcuterie board. I had this past Monday off to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and I decided to do an outdoor brunch with a close friend of mine in the city. We originally wanted to go somewhere else, but it was super, super packed. So we stumbled upon this place instead, and it was indeed the best decision.
My proudest accomplishment.
This. Sourdough. Loaf. I admit, I’ve discovered a new way to bake sourdough bread that is so much easier compared to my recipe. An update will be in order soon, promise.
And that, my friends, is what’s on my plate. Have a great week!
