There’s nothing like a good ol’ frozen drink when you’re hanging out by the water, am I right? I just spent the most relaxing week with my in-laws up in Minnesota. This is my third year heading up to the cabin at Ten Mile Lake, and it has become one of my favorite summer traditions. With a fridge stocked with strawberries, making frozen strawberry margaritas was a must!
When we got to the lake this year, my mother-in-law packed two huge sheets of strawberries that she freshly picked. They were the most beautiful strawberries you ever did see. None of them were deformed from chemicals or anything, they each had a perfect shape and perfect taste. After biting into one of these beauties, I knew I wouldn’t be able to buy average strawberries from the grocery store any time soon.
With so many strawberries on hand, we needed to do some sort of large recipe that would use them up before they went bad. The thought of making a strawberry pie was tossed around, but with the sun blazing and the lake right behind us, I had the inspiration to make some frozen margaritas. So we got the blender out, brought out the tequila, and went to town.
While buying margarita mix in the liquor store is an easy (and sometimes cheaper) alternative to buying so much fruit, using fruit is actually a much healthier option for you. Some margarita mixes out there are really high in sugar and even contain high-fructose corn syrup. Strawberries do have fructose in it, but the sugar content doesn’t even match up.
However, I found that adding in a bit of agave did help with sweetening up this drink by using a natural sweetner. I’m personally not a fan of a sugary cocktail (or sugary alcoholic beverages in general), but I knew everyone around me wouldn’t enjoy such a tart drink.
If you would rather a tart margarita, I suggest even lightening up the agave used in this recipe.
While the strawberries and agave still contain a good amount of sugar, the sugar is coming from fructose that is natural to the ingredients being used—rather than having an obscene amount of added sugar.
After blending up my frozen strawberry margarita I hopped in my suit and headed to the beach. It was the perfect beverage top sip on for the Fourth of July.
You could probably also attempt this same recipe using different types of fruits.
While I haven’t tested this out myself, I have a feeling this recipe could be versatile for whatever you have on hand. Maybe you have some watermelon, pineapple, or even some raspberries after picking them this summer. If you end up trying it with a different fruit, comment below and tell me how it went. I’ll want to give it a try!
