Ridiculously Easy Creamy Vegan Pizza Sauce Recipe

November 23, 2021

You’re probably thinking I should be posting something a little more Thanksgiving-like this week (if you really need inspo, click here and here), but people—Thanksgiving is just one meal! You have so many other eating opportunities this whole weekend (especially if you’re traveling to see family), and sometimes having a few easy recipes in your arsenal when you need it can be a real-life saver. And this week, for me, it’s this creamy vegan pizza sauce. It’s only two ingredients—and one of them is just water.

So what’s this pizza sauce made of? Cashews.

Don’t get all weird on me yet, alright? Hear me out. Because dairy is considered an animal by-product, it isn’t allowed within the vegan diet—meaning anything creamy and cheesy is completely out of the question. Sure, some companies have tried to replicate plant-based cheese, but truthfully I’m not a huge fan of the texture.

Instead of using those processed, plant-based alternatives, I just grab a bag of cashews and blend it up with some water. Add a pinch of salt or whatever other spices you want, and voila. It’s done. Pizza sauce in 30 seconds. You’re welcome.

How to make cashew vegan pizza sauce

Oh gosh, it’s so easy, part of me thinks I don’t even need to write a paragraph about it. But here you go: Blend up one cup of raw, whole, unsalted cashews with 1/2 cup of warm water.

And…that’s it. I know it sounds insane and you may not believe me, but it truly is that magical. It creates the creamiest sauce with a touch of sweet and savory. I like to sprinkle in some sea salt before blending to give it a little extra something, and you could even mix in some garlic or Italian spices if you’re feeling it.

I recommend using a high-powered blender like a NutriBullet for this. It makes blending up those nuts really easy and gives you that smooth, velvety consistency you’re looking for when it comes to a creamy pizza sauce.

What kind of pizza should you make?

Ah, the world is really your oyster. But I do find this pizza sauce works well with a pile of fresh veggies, a drizzle of garlic-infused olive oil, and some fresh cracked salt and pepper.

This recipe makes either enough for two personal pizzas (I like to use the frozen Banza chickpea crust for my personal pizzas), or enough sauce for a large pizza to share.

And I doubled the chickpeas, whoops.I mean, I feel like that's the concept of a soup. Use what you have. Let it simmer, play some tunes. Don't get it on your white pants. Etc.
