I’m not really posting this recipe to teach you how to make a BLT, because the recipe is clearly in the name: Bacon. Lettuce. Tomato. I’m just posting this as a public service announcement to everyone that the BLT does, in fact, still exist, and we’ve been sleeping on it for so long. It’s time we change that.
Sandwiches have never really been my thing, and I know why: It takes an artist to really make a top-notch sandwich. Putting together this muffuletta sandwich was eye-opening for me because it helped me realize how terrible all of my sandwiches were before it. I can actually enjoy a good lunch instead of throwing a few slices of turkey and cheese between mushy white bread.
In my opinion, the key to making a good sandwich is to focus on the texture.
The BLT is the perfect textural sandwich. Between the crispy bacon, cool tomato, crunchy salad, smooth mayo, and toasty bread, your tastebuds are going through quite an adventure.
The same kind of rules should apply for any type of sandwich that you make. A mushy sandwich is off-putting. You can simply change the texture of that mushy turkey-and-cheese by throwing the sandwich on a skillet and turning into a panini. The cheese will melt, the bread will toast, and the sandwich will be a lot more exciting.
How I cook bacon
If I have the time, I really do prefer cooking bacon in the oven. I’ll lay out a few pieces on parchment paper and bake it at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
But between the preheating and the baking, it obviously takes time. And when’ I’m throwing together a quick lunch, I don’t have much time
My next go-to alternative is to cook in the microwave. I know it sounds slightly off-putting, but trust me on this one. You can have crispy bacon in a matter of minutes. Get a bacon plate and cooking (and cleaning) will be a breeze.
If you really need the recipe, here is is. But I’m confident you know what you’re doing. So consider this your inspiration to make a BLT for lunch today.
